Archives: Appreciating a Master: William S. Flynn. Every now and then, while doing research, I stumble across a story I wrote years ago for The Philadelphia Inquirer that is still a fun read. Like one from May 2000 on William S. Flynn.

"No architect has put his mark on the Philadelphia golf scene with the flourish and enduring impact of William S. Flynn, who left his native Massachusetts to become greenskeeper at Merion Golf Club soon after it was completed in 1912, and who never left the area," I wrote.

"Manufacturers’ Golf and Country Club, Huntingdon Valley Country Club, Philadelphia Country Club, Philmont Country Club, Rolling Green Country Club, Green Valley Country Club, Lancaster Country Club - they are all fabulous, and they are all Flynn."

Dan Burton, former GAP president, talks about rising within USGA . Only a few years ago, Dan Burton was president of GAP. Then he joined the Executive Committee of the USGA and began a steady climb within the ranks of the game’s governing body in this country.

China’s recent golf course crackdown masks staggering pace of construction. According to Reuters, Chinese authorities have closed five golf courses throughout the country since March, digging up three and converting two more for other uses, a supposed signal to "would-be" violators of the government’s 2004 ban on the construction of new golf courses that Beijing is getting serious about enforcement.

As the guy who came up with the idea of playing the U.S. Open and U.S. Women’s Open on back-to-back weeks on the same golf course, I have had no shortage of questions, comments,/accusations coming my way.

The initial reaction when the announcement of the doubleheader was made in 2009 was overwhelmingly positive. But as the championships draw closer, most of the comments are of the "What the hell were you thinking?" variety.
