The Union League GC at Torresdale: Makeover for a classic club and course. If all goes as scheduled, in early or mid-May, the Donald Ross-designed course we’ve long known as Torresdale-Frankford Country Club will stage something of a grand reopening amid hoopla and high hopes.

Along with a new name – it is now called The Union League Golf Club at Torresdale – the venerable club in Northeast Philadelphia will boast a $3 million restoration of its classic-era the course, and a $4 million renovation of its stately clubhouse.

"Bringing these two clubs together is the new business model," said Jeff McFadden, general manager of the Union League.

Philadelphia Cricket Club awarded 2020 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball. First, the newly-restored Cricket Club gets the 2015 PGA Professional National Championship, in June.

Now, the USGA has picked Cricket to host the 2020 Amateur Four-Ball, it’s newest championship.

These are fine times for the Wissahickon Course, which was also cited by Golf Digest as one of the best restoration projects of the year.

Augusta National unseats Pine Valley as No. 1 in Golf Digest latest rankings. Augusta National, home of the Masters, and Pine Valley, our hometown layout of some distinction, continue to play leap-frog with one another in the latest Golf Digest rankings of America’s 100 Greatest Courses.

Pine Valley maintains a shred of dignity and self-respect by holding on to the No. 2 spot.

All this is, of course, a way to sell magazines and keep golfers debating the merits of courses most of them will never play.

Lester George to create master plan for North Hills Country Club. Golf architect Lester George has been engaged by historic North Hills Country Club in Glenside to create a long-range master plan of renovations for the club.

The golf course, originally designed by J. Franklin Meehan in 1908, and later renovated by William Flynn, was built around the remnants of three abandoned iron mines.

Putting Merion back like it was before the U.S. Open. A year and a half after the 2013 U.S. Open, Merion Golf Club is almost finished putting the East Course back the way it was. That was the plan all along. If anything, the club expected the restoration work to be completed sooner.

The restoration project involves removing a couple of bunkers that were added for the Open, moving two other bunkers, restoring one bunker that had been removed in he early 1990s, plus widening the fairways to their pre-Open widths of about 30 yards. Gil Hanse is handling the bunker work.

Shore Gate’s Harry Bittner named president of GACGA. The Greater Atlantic City Golf Association (GACGA) Board of Directors has named Shore Gate Golf Club General Manager Harry J. Bittner as its new president.

Bittner’s position entails overseeing the GACGA and working closely with the organization towards its mission of positioning the Greater Atlantic City region as one of the East Coast’s premier golf destinations.

A native of Philadelphia, Bittner began his career in the golf industry at — what was known at the time as Seaview Country ClubM — now Stockton Seaview Hotel & Golf Club. He quickly become known as a top-rate golf instructor and continued his skills in this area with tutelage under Hank Haney and Jim McLean.
