What To Make Of Tiger?. To borrow from screenwriter William Goldman’s iconic comment about Hollywood, when it comes to Tiger Woods, nobody knows anything.

There are three reasons for this. First, it’s golf, which no one has ever figured out. Second, much if not all of the pertinent information is possessed by Tiger Woods, who doesn’t over-share. And, third, unless you count Bobby Jones retiring at 28, we have never seen a truly historic player fall so far, so fast, so early.

Jaime Diaz has more in Golf World.

The death of golf.... It’s a catchy, scary headline for a very sobering assessment of the state of the game in the August issue of Men’s Journal magazine.

The sub-head on the piece reads:

It’s expensive, difficult, and demands the kind of time most people get only when they go on vacation — or retire. From the dried up fairways of Southern California to the vacant course-side condos on the Carolina coast, we survey the sport’s demise — and the entrepreneurs hoping to reinvent it for a new, less patient generation. It’s painful but essential reading.

Hyndman Memorial Classic to commemorate legendary amateur’s 100th birthday. In the history of Philadelphia golf, few names stand out more than Bill Hyndman, one of the most accomplished amateur players this country has ever produced.

Hyndman, who died in 2001 at the age of 85, won his first Philadelphia Amateur title in 1935, when he was only 19. He went on to win two more Amateur titles, 10 Patterson Cup crowns, six Silver Crosses from the Golf Association of Philadelphia.

Hyndman’s legacy is such that each year the Philadelphia Section PGA conducts the The William Hyndman III Memorial Classic at Huntingdon Valley Country Club, his home club.

British Open: Jordan Spieth’s story began in Pennsylvania steel town. For all his Lone Star loyalty, it may be the 21-year-old’s Pennsylvania roots - less-known but as deep as a St. Andrews pot bunker - that on the eve of his history-making Old Course quest better explain Spieth’s rapid rise to golf’s summit.

The steel-town toughness, the artistry and flair, the athleticism, competitiveness and poise he exhibits, all can be sourced to his Pennsylvania heritage.

Frank Fitzpatrick has the story in the Inquirer.
