The 16th at Inniscrone GC: When is a hole too tough?. From the day Innsicrone GC opened in 1998, the 16th hole was the hole everybody talked about. Some people loved it. Some people hated it. Everybody scratched their head.

From the back tees on the 387-yard par 4, you were facing a blind shot into an uphill dogleg left, with upper and lower split fairways, separated by a dramatically sloped, unforgiving wall of gnarly rough.

Inniscrone GM and superintendent Tom Bolko decided it was too tough and that he had to do something. (Photo: 16th "Before")

Union League to vote on purchase of Torresdale Frankford CC. Union League leaders have called a Wednesday membership meeting to ratify the proposal to take over the 118-year-old golf course and its clubhouse, on 150 acres in Northeast Philadelphia, Joe DiStefano writes in the Inquirer.

The Union League hopes to offer "unlimited golf" to members who want it for $3,600 a year, plus pool, tennis, dining, and shooting.

That would raise total Union League fees for full golf members to about $8,000 a year; for TFCC, a Donald Ross design, it could mean salvation.

There are putts you are trying to make, and there are the ones you are happy to get even remotely close. Paula Creamer’s eagle attempt in her second playoff hole on Sunday was supposed to be the latter.

The recently-engaged Creamer rolled in an improbable 75-footer against Azahara Mu

Eleven years later, McCullough’s, which is owned by the township, is still going strong and still turning heads. Windswept and largely wide-open, McCullough’s likes to bill itself as a "taste of the British Isles at the Jersey Shore."

The Grind: Jason Day wins, Victor Dubuisson emerges, and Rory starts planning a .

By Alex Myers

Welcome to another edition of The Grind, where we’re thankful for the match play refresher we received over the weekend. Some important lessons? 1. A golfer should always display good sportsmanship -- but not too much good sportsmanship; 2. No lead is safe, especially against Graeme McDowell; 3. Always expect your opponent to succeed. Even if his golf ball is lodged against a cactus in the desert. Eve

It’s now OK for Jason Day to say he wants to be No. 1.

By John Strege

Jason Day has always been so long on potential that he had only a wedge left to fulfill it.

Even he thought so. He once took measure of his talent and concluded it was sufficient to "take him down," him being Tiger Woods. "My goal is to be the number one golfer in the world," he said then. He was 20. The backlash was immediate and immense.

The treasure trove of golf writing by A.W. Tillinghast. When Joe Bausch began to research the history of Cobb’s Creek GC, the city-owned gem with a rich history and pedigree, he made an unexpected and intriguing discovery: a treasure trove of golf writing by the well-known architect A.W. Tillinghast.

Tilly, it turns out, was a facile and profilic scribe who chronicled the city’s golf scene for two newspapers, The Public Ledger and The Record, from 1911 to 1918, in addition to his many articles for national golf magazines.

"Little did I know what I was getting into," writes Bausch, who spent countless nights pouring over microfilm at the Villanova Univeristy library. (USGA photo)

Seaview to unveil Bay Course renovations. Highlighting the Bay Course renovations are new tee boxes on the fourth, fifth, 10th and 12th holes, which will add 150 yards in overall length to the golf course. Also, the creation of a new bunker complex between the fourth and fifth holes will further enhance the playing experience from the new back tee on hole number five.

Additional course refinements include the rebuilding of all existing tee boxes and tee surfaces on the Bay Course to create a better, more consistent playing surface for golfers.

When reality had sunk in that the Eisenhower Tree was no longer, we architecture wonks got excited. No, not at the site of a majestic specimen getting taken down by a silly ice storm. That’s sad.
